Garage gym setup: layout, floor and storage

A Utah garage is the most common home gym: a concrete slab, a high door opening and room for a rack. Most problems come from the door tracks, the car and the cold.

ONE GARAGE BAY GYM
Fig. 1 One bay for the gym, one for the car: rack against the back wall, mats under the lifting area.

Short answer

Put the rack against the back or side wall, away from the garage door tracks and opener. Leave about 7 feet of width for a men’s Olympic bar plus room to load plates at each end. Cover the lifting area with 3/4 inch rubber stall mats. If a car must still fit, use a folding wall rack and store plates on the wall.

Layout, step by step

  1. Map the no-go zones

Mark the garage door tracks, the opener and its rail, water heater and furnace clearances, and the path to the house door.

  2. Pick the rack wall

Usually the back wall, under the highest part of the ceiling, away from the door rail. Measure the ceiling at that exact spot.

  3. Measure the bar zone

A men’s Olympic bar is about 7 feet long. Add room at each end to slide plates on and off.

  4. Lay the floor

Cover at least the rack and the deadlift spot with 3/4 inch stall mats.

  5. Get storage off the floor

Wall plate storage, hooks for bars and bands, and a shelf for small gear keep the bay usable.

Garage gym basics

Not sure what to put in it? The home gym builder lists it for a garage bay or two car garage. Rack choice: power rack vs squat stand.

Questions people ask

How much space do I need for a garage gym?

A single garage bay fits a rack or folding rack, a bar and a bench if the car moves out to train. A two car garage can keep one bay for the gym full time. Measure the bar width, the rack footprint and a walkway around it.

Can I lift in the garage with the car parked?

With a folding wall rack and wall storage, many people pull the car out for each session. Keep the bar path clear of the car and the door tracks.

Do I need to seal the garage floor before laying mats?

Not usually. Clean and dry the slab, then lay the mats. If the slab sweats or gets wet, keep moisture from sitting under the rubber.
