Short answer

To try equipment in person: Utah Home Fitness in Salt Lake City (1336 Foothill Dr) and Sandy (10875 State St). For small gear: sporting goods stores such as Scheels in Sandy. For used racks, plates and machines: KSL Classifieds, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and the University of Utah and Utah State University surplus sales. Fitness showrooms

A showroom lets you walk on a treadmill, sit on a bike and feel a bench before you spend. These are the specialty home fitness stores we could confirm on the store’s own pages.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported in 2020 that Utah Home Fitness then also had a Farmington store; its site listed only Salt Lake City and Sandy when we checked (Salt Lake Tribune, Utah Home Fitness).

Sporting goods stores

Big sporting goods stores carry dumbbells, kettlebells, benches, bands and some cardio machines. Stock varies by store, so call ahead for heavy items.

Public surplus sales

Universities, cities and the state retire gym equipment from their own facilities. It is often commercial grade and priced to move. You inspect it in person and haul it yourself.

State agencies get first claim on state surplus property before it is offered to the public, under Utah’s surplus property rule (Utah Admin. Code R33-26). Online auctions, including the University of Utah’s GovDeals page, list items with photos.

Used marketplaces

Utah’s used market is busy, and steel gear holds up well second hand. KSL Classifieds, Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist (Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, Logan and St George sites) are where most local listings appear. Region by region tips are in used gym equipment in Utah, and the inspection checklist covers what to check before you pay.

Farm stores for flooring

The standard garage gym floor is the horse stall mat: 4 x 6 feet, 3/4 inch thick and about 100 pounds (Greatmats). Farm and ranch stores stock them; Garage Gym Reviews covers the Tractor Supply mat. See the flooring guide for how many you need.

Utah’s fitness industry, briefly

iFIT Health & Fitness, the parent of NordicTrack and ProForm, is based in Logan (Business Wire). In 2020 the Tribune reported record home gym sales in Utah, with treadmills the most popular item (Salt Lake Tribune).
